When it comes to setting goals, how’s your aim? Unrealistically high, not high enough, or just right? Many of us misunderstand our inner strengths and how directly they’re involved in our everyday life.  In fact, your sense of fulfillment, healthy self-image, your happiness, successes, and failures are all driven by how you use these strengths. Learn how to use them properly and they activate a clear path to reaching your goals. Mis-use them and you’ll leave a wake of damage in your relationships and personal circumstances. Your idealism is no exception.  It’s an essential inner strength for those of you who have identified that you possess the “NF” inner design. Is your idealism working for you?

Idealism is simply seeing things as they should be or as we would like to see them, rather than as they are. So, an idealist is someone who is positively oriented to possibilities.  Why would there be anything wrong with that?  There absolutely isn’t!  But, if you are an idealist, then it can be a challenge to see someone that is as “normal.”

Regardless of your inner design , there is value in idealism.  If used properly, it fuels your imagination and creativity. It keeps hopes high for discovering new solutions to important problems. However, if you possess the “NF” InnerKinetics® profile, it’s important to recognize just how prominent your drive to achieve the ideal actually is. It influences everything you can imagine, create or do.  I like to call it “Gap Management.” Until I discovered my InnerKinetics, I didn’t appreciate how this particular part of my design had direct impact on my mood.  Because an “NF” has an ideal in mind for any circumstance, it’s common to experience disappointment through your day when things fall short. That is, unless you are using your idealism properly.

 

MIND THE GAP…

When you’re an idealist and a dreamer, you can clearly see a gap between the way you picture things should or could be and the way things actually are. You then have to make a choice.

  1. Accept the outcome, focus on the positives and try hitting your mark again.
  2. Or, let disappointment turn to anger or frustration and convince yourself that it wasn’t worth trying at all.

Although it’s easy to see what we SHOULD choose, actually making that choice can be tough. It’s especially hard when the personal stakes are high and the outcomes have a direct impact on our levels of hope and optimism.

 

SO, HOW HIGH SHOULD AN IDEALIST AIM?

Idealism done right requires a fine touch.  For a healthy “NF,” aiming high is essential.  We have to go big and try to hit a mark that’s very possible to miss. Otherwise, we’re not engaged in reaching for goals that breakthrough barriers.  If we don’t go a bit “unrealistic,” we’re not using our imagination, optimism or enthusiasm to create. Nor are we able to realize more of our potential.

If you’ve ever tried to help a disappointed idealist, or you are the disappointed idealist, keep this in mind:  The mark you’re aiming for must be HIGH. You’ll make it sometimes. Many times, you won’t. But you must take pride and build confidence inyour dreams. They are a critical part of what makes you the Real You.

All healthy NF’s know that you must regroup, reset the bar just a tad bit higher and go again. That’s how your idealism works! Think about the people in history who share the strength of idealism: Ghandi, Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela and Dr. Seuss are just a few of the NF’s that made their mark by aiming idealistically high.

HERE’S JUST 3 QUICK TIPS TO DEVELOPING YOUR NF STRENGTH OF IDEALISM AND USING IT TO KEEP YOUR HOPES HIGH:

  • BELIEVE FERVENTLY that optimism is better than pessimism.
  • PRACTICE USING YOUR MIND’S EYE since it sees with equal clarity to your physical eye and at times refashions what your physical eye sees.
  • DON’T FORGET HOW FAR DREAMING HAS BROUGHT YOU: Remember your actualized dreams and write them down. Keeping a visible display will help you remember often and helps keeps the vital nutrient of hope alive.
